New opportunities for cooperation between Vietnam and Myanmar

On October 30, in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar, Minister of Information and Communications Truong Minh Tuan held bilateral talks with Minister of Information of Myanmar Pe Myint.


At the talks, Minister Truong Minh Tuan highly appreciated the traditional friendship between Vietnam and Myanmar during 42 years. He updated about the situation of information and communication of Vietnam. Accordingly, in 2016, the information and communication sector continues to affirm its role and position in the socio-economic development of the country. The IT industry is becoming a fast-growing, sustainable and high-turnover industry with significant export value, which contributes significantly to the national GDP.
Minister Truong Minh Tuan stressed that at the threshold of the 4.0 revolution, Vietnam's ICT industry had great potentials by exploiting and mastering new technologies such as Internet, cloud computing, data analysis, telecom - IT - broadcasting convergence, etc. In this context, the task of turning Vietnam into an advanced IT country has been determined by the State and Government.
Vietnam currently has 26 telecommunication operators licensed to establish public telecommunication networks, such as VNPT, Mobifone, VTC, etc. These operators have invested abroad, including markets in Southeast Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America, etc.
To further strengthen cooperation in an effective and practical manner, with the aim of bringing information and communication into a typical cooperation in the traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation between Vietnam and Myanmar, the Ministry of Information and Communications requested the two sides to build a ministerial-level agreement between the two ministries, to create a legal framework to promote cooperation between the two countries in the field of information and communications.
Minister of Information Pe Myint expressed his wish to cooperate with Ministry of Information and Communications of Vietnam. He also reported a number of policy changes of Myanmar.
At the talks, the two ministers agreed that the two sides would promote cooperation in the information sector in order to promote mutual understanding and create a healthy information environment as a driving force for cooperation and development of the two countries.
The two ministries will strengthen cooperation in state management, sharing of information and experience, periodically exchange working delegations and talks between management agencies, etc. A MOU will be signed between the two ministries as a basis for further strengthening cooperation.
The two Ministries will also promote the exchange of policies on the management of information content and broadcasting programs; share experience in planning and managing mobile TV services, organize exhibitions of books and newspapers, press photos, etc.
The two ministers believed that the outcome of the talks would open up new, practical and effective cooperation opportunities between the two countries in the field of information, marking a milestone in the 42 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
