ASEAN - Japan carry out cyber exercises against extortion attacks to critical information systems

On May, 25 th , 2016, in Hanoi, more than 100 leaders of network security, information security of critical organizations of Vietnam participated in international cyber exercises with 9 other ASEAN countries and Japan. Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Thanh Hung attended and delivered the opening speech.

This year international ASEAN - Japan Cyber ​​Exercise has the theme "Prevention of extortion attacks to critical information systems of the ASEAN countries and Japan".

In his opening speech, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Thanh Hung said: The regular participation in exercises with countries would enhance the role of state management in information security of the MIC. The exercise also helps to improve the ability to react to incidents and risks of network attacks, specially attacks to national critical information systems.
 
Mr. Nguyen Khac Lich, Deputy Director of VNCERT, Head of Organization Board of the ASEAN - Japan Cyber ​​Exercise said, these annual exercises strengthened the cooperation, information sharing, as well as improved policies, procedures, rules, measures to prevent network attacks of each country and between members. Critical agencies such as: banks and large financial institutions; telecommunications operators; Central Post Office; VNNIC; Aviation Corporation, Vietnam Electricity Group are very interested in exercises with the participation of nearly 50 units with elected officials who are responsible for building procedures, processes and policies for incident responses.
 
Facing the scenarios, organizations, units need to have procedures to share the warnings, situations with other organizations in the ASEAN region and Japan. During the exercises, participants focused on discussion of procedures, processes for the response, information sharing principles upon cyber incidents. Then each country or organization will come up with a scheme to respond quickly and effectively to each incident, at the same time, to find out general rules while coordinating large scale rescues.
 
The theme of the 2016 ASEAN - Japan Cyber ​​Exercise, “Prevention of extortion attacks to critical information systems of the ASEAN countries and Japan" focused on the current hottest issue on network security. It was estimated that in Vietnam, in 2015, there were more than 1,300 cases of this malware infection.
