Five rural districts of HCM City will receive more than 52,500 books for free in September as part of the programme ”Give books to libraries in rural districts.”
The organisers will give 48,200 books to libraries of 50 schools in the districts of Hóc Môn, Củ Chi, Bình Chánh, Nhà Bè, and Cần Giờ, and more than 4,300 books to their public libraries.
Department director Lâm Đình Thắng said at a conference on Thursday afternoon that the city would continue the programme until 2025 and target to give books to at least 10 schools each year.
At the event, the organisers announced a recommended reading list for students and teachers in primary school.
The list consists of 965 book titles featuring various fields such as science, mathematics, history, geography, literature, language and self-development, with illustrations to attract young readers.
The books were selected among more than 6,000 publications which were recommended by 30 publishing houses and 50 experienced teachers from October 2020 to August 2022.
Every year, the department and the association will update the list with new publications, and offer training courses for teachers and librarians about how to use the list efficiently.
Lê Hoàng, VNPA’s vice chairman, said: “The list will help build and enrich school libraries’ catalogue with different kinds of publications.”
“This programme also aims to create reading habits among young readers and promote reading culture in schools,” said Hoàng.
