US - Vietnam: Smart cities workshop

On June 21, the Smart Cities Workshop was jointly organized by Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC), the US Embassy in Vietnam, the US Agency for International Trade Development USTDA).

Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phuc, Director of Authority of Information Technology Application, Ministry of Information and Communications said: The strong development of urbanization had brought with it many challenges. This puts pressure on the urbanization process to become more sustainable, smarter cities. One of the factors that play an important role in this transition is ICT.
 
As the state authority in the field of post, telecommunications and IT, since the beginning of 2016, MIC has promoted international cooperation, learning experience from developed cities, technology platforms, technical standards, IT applications and information,…to determine the conditions for building smart cities. Currently, the cities such as: Ha Noi, Thua Thien Hue, Lam Dong, Ho Chi Minh, Quang Ninh, Vinh Phuc, Bac Ninh ... are beginning on the development and approval of smart city projects.
 
In particular, Mr Phuc said that the research and planning of smart cities should be closely linked with the plans, projects in applying IT, building and developing e-government, information systems, databases, etc. The IT application and e-government will be the foundation to create a smarter government, which is the core of a Smart City Scheme.

Speaking at the workshop, USTDA Executive Director, Mrs. Enoh T. Ebong said the USTDA was a pioneer in promoting smart city building. The workshop introduces cases of smart city building in emerging markets such as Turkey and India and share lessons learned.
 
Ms. Ehong T. Ebong expressed her hope that this workshop would contribute to promoting the development of strategies at the central and local levels on IT application in order to improve the management of infrastructure in various fields, such as transportation, electricity, water and public services.
 
At the workshop, representatives from the USTDA, Microsoft, FPT Information Systems, HP, BCIU,... discussed two main topics: Smart Cities Initiative - Global Challenges and Opportunities, Smart Cities and the IOT: Trends and Connections.
