Following the success of the 2013 and 2014 event, the Internet Day 2015 offers a good opportunity for enterprises operating in the field, State management agencies and Internet users to connect and share experiences, as well as affirming the important role of the Internet in changing the lives of Vietnamese people.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Pham Hong Hai emphasised Vietnam Internet Day 2015 marked an important step in the transformation of Vietnam in innovation and international integration, creating widespread use of the Internet in learning and working, and promoting creativity and economic value based on the Internet.
Affirming that Vietnam holds potential to attract and develop initiatives and Internet of Things (IoT) technology-based applications, Hai said that IoT appears in the country in a lot of ideas and products such as smart homes, intelligent transportation, and smart cities.
On the basis of the four technological pillars - Social, Mobility, Analytics and Cloud - IoT is expected to create an outbreak in terms of both the number of connections as well as Internet-based services and applications, creating a strong motivation to stimulate economic growth and technological innovation.
In recent years, Internet and telecommunications infrastructure in the country has gradually flourished. As of September 2015, the total bandwidth of domestic Internet connections has reached more than 900 Gbps and 1400 Gbps for international Internet connections. Currently, Vietnam has about 120 million mobile subscribers, including more than 35 million 3G users with an average growth rate of over 30%. The total numbers of fixed broadband internet subscribers reached 7 million, of which FTTH fiber optic subscribers account for more than 40% and are growing strongly.
With an increasingly developed broadband telecommunications infrastructure and a young population fond of technology, Vietnam is making an important step as a market for the development of IoT technology-based applications, Hai said.
Qualcomm General Director for Indochina Thieu Phuong Nam also confirmed IoT is a trend that is consistent with Vietnam and is a great opportunity for the country to catch up with others thanks to its advantages in high-tech human resources, particularly in the field of software development.
According to the Vietnam Internet Association, the organisational unit of the Vietnam Internet Day, the IoT trend will bring unprecedented opportunities for organisations and businesses as a trend for innovation, and will generate an estimated US$19 trillion in the next ten years.
Under the framework of the annual event, a range of seminars will also be held introducing the latest modern techniques and applications in various fields of IT infrastructure, mobile, Internet-based applications, online services, digital content, e-commerce, online marketing, and Internet safety.
Vietnam officially connected to the Internet on November 19, 1997. According to statistics, the current proportion of Internet users in Vietnam is approximately 40%, making it one of the fastest growing countries in the world on the Internet.
